Welcome back to yet ANOTHER installment of What I’ve Been Watching! If you’re new to the series, I share mini spoiler-free reviews of the movies I’ve seen at the cinema recently. Let’s get crackin’!
The Shape Of Water
Holy moly you guys, this movie was stunning. It looked great, the performances were fab and it was just a lovely film. The concept of the film sounds mad, so go into this film knowing as little as possible and I think you’ll fall in love with the story like I did.
You know when a film just really impresses you? The Shape of Water did that for me, so I’m not surprised it’s winning plenty of awards!
I went in with average expectations and came out very pleased with the reality!
The Greatest Showman (Sing-A-Long)
OK, so I’ve reviewed this movie already but I wanted to talk specifically about the sing-a-long version, and also the fact that the more times I see this movie, the more I love it so the overall rating has gone up vs. my first review!
So firstly – when you book tickets to go to a sing-a-long, SING! Liam and I were pretty much the only ones singing. We didn’t mind though as we still had a great time. A particular highlight to sing along to was Never Enough because that song gives me all the feels.
Expectation: 4.5 (y’know, my original rating!)
Reality: 5 (I’ve seen this movie FOUR times now and I just adore it more and more each time)
I was kind of excited for this movie, to see a female-led coming of age film. I also like Saoirse Ronan a lot. However, I really struggled with the story. I just didn’t enjoy it. I found myself bored at times and not engaging with the plot at all, even though I really tried.
It’s not necessarily a bad movie, it’s just sadly average. Given the hype it’s gotten, it’s a shame it fell short for me. The soundtrack was good though, and by Saoirse Ronan and Laurie Metcalf gave ace performances.
Unfortunately, Game Night suffers from what a lot of comedies suffer from – giving all the good jokes away in the trailer. While I still laughed at some of them in the movie, it is a shame that I knew they were coming. On the flip side, there’s a great cameo near the end of the film which did surprise me!
Jason Bateman and Kyle Chandler were definitely the highlight characters in Game Night. I love Jason Bateman’s delivery, and Kyle Chandler was just generally great considering this was his first comedy. I adore him in Friday Night Lights.
Despite knowing most of the jokes, there are a few twists and turns unspoiled by the trailer and overall I did enjoy the film and would see it again.
Isle of Dogs
We have another Secret Screening to go to next week and I’m hoping it’s going to be for Isle of Dogs. I haven’t really watched a lot of Wes Anderson’s work but did enjoy Fantastic Mr Fox so I’m hopeful!
There’s also a lot of well-known actors providing voices for this movie, so I’m optimistic it’s going to pretty decent.
You Were Never Really Here
I hadn’t even heard of this film until Liam mentioned it was out this week. I’m intrigued by the plot as it is basically about a veteran who goes searching for missing girls. I’m assuming violence will ensue. It stars Joaquin Phoenix, and he does tend to gravitate towards more “interesting” stuff so…we shall see.
