Welcome to the first What I’ve Been Watching of 2018! If you’re new to the series, it’s where I share mini spoiler-free reviews of films I’ve seen at the cinema as well as my expectations for films I’ll be seeing next!
This time round, I got to see a movie I feel like I’ve been waiting forever to watch as well as one I wish I’d never bothered with…
The Greatest Showman
The trailer for this movie made me SO excited! It looked fantastic. This is always a bit worrying though as you wonder whether it will live up to it. In honesty, I assumed it wouldn’t because I’ve been burned by this before.
But OMG SO GOOD. The Greatest Showman is so brilliant in fact that I saw it twice within just a few days. I took my Mum on Boxing Day and was worried she’d hate it but we both came out of the cinema singing its praises and trying to decide our favourite song. Then, I went again with Liam a few days later so we could see it together (he’d also taken his Mum on Boxing Day!).
My rating on second viewing actually went up. I initially rated the film 4 but I just loved it so much on repeat viewing that it got an extra half!
The story is wonderful, the music is wonderful and it’s just all in all WONDERFUL. I’m already looking forward to seeing it again…
Pitch Perfect 3
Sigh. You know a comedy is bad when you don’t even raise a smile. I quite enjoyed the first Pitch Perfect, don’t really remember the second and wish I could forget the third. I’m hopeful that this is in fact the end of Pitch Perfect because it’d be a disservice to the talent to squeeze another sequel out.
I really like Anna Kendrick in particular, but ended up feeling bad for her for even being a part of this movie. As for my respect for John Lithgow after his crappy Aussie accent…well, I may just have to rewatch his series of Dexter so he can claim some credibility back.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
I saw the trailer for this film ages ago, and as it was billed as a dark comedy I was 100% on board. Geddit? Board? Billboard? HA. So when it was listed as an Unlimited screening, we jumped at the chance to get tickets before all the good seats were gone.
Anyway, long story short this film had some brilliant comedic and dramatic performances but where it fell short was the slightly convoluted story which didn’t have the closure I’d hoped for. It’s a shame because with a better script this could have been a really great movie.
So what’s next?
I’m really not convinced this is going to be a good film but I’m willing to give it a chance! The concept looks totally bizarre but more in a “try hard” way than in an interesting one…here’s hoping I will be proven wrong!
The Darkest Hour
I’m just fascinated in how different they’ve made Sirius look in this movie…it’s ridiculous! The true story of this time period is also intriguing so I’m hoping this is going to be a good drama.
