I’m not entirely sure how we’re up to instalment number FOURTEEN of this series, but hey… here we are! Let’s dive in to the latest movies I’ve seen shall we?
Happy Death Day
So I knew this wasn’t exactly going to be my movie of the year, but Liam really wanted to see it and I was optimistic it might be comparable to It Follows or Get Out as a good modern horror flick. It wasn’t. I found the vast majority of the film to be boring, and the “twists” verged on stupid.
It’s not a terrible movie – it’s perfectly acceptable as a slasher with a difference, but it just didn’t do it for me.
I have been hyped for this film for what feels like FOREVER (but actually pretty much from when the trailer dropped). I was really let down by the last Thor movie because…well…it really wasn’t good, and I was hopeful that it could be turned back around for the third instalment.
My hopes were well and truly lived up to AND exceeded with Ragnarok you guys – I LOVED it. It was funny, had a fun story line and it was good seeing Thor and the Hulk team up. I knew I was going to enjoy it when I found out that Taika Waititi was directing (What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople are two of the funniest movies out there), and Ragnarok had me cackling too.
If you enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy, you’ll love this. I just want Taika to direct all Marvel movies now!
To be honest, I wasn’t hugely fussed about seeing this but it was one of Cineworld’s Unlimited screenings so figured I’d go along with Liam and check it out. Without giving anything away, the film starts pretty slow and I felt a bit bored at times. When things did get more interesting (which is basically when the always amazing Oscar Isaacs makes an appearance), it was fairly decent.
All of the performances were good, and the story was fine but there’s another story going on at the same time which doesn’t really seem to fit with the rest of the film and actually, could have been a potentially more interesting strand to follow.
So what’s coming next?
We’re yet to see Battle of the Sexes which I listed as one of my “to see next” movies last time. That’s going to be another Unlimited screening so looking forward to booking that in! But what else will I likely be watching soon?
A Bad Moms Christmas
I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed Bad Moms – it was much funnier than I expected and Mila Kunis is a goddamn queen. So yeah, it’s like this one won’t be as good but it’s worth a go.
Murder on the Orient Express
I don’t know if I’m going to like this one. It’s had pretty mixed reviews, and apparently mostly bad! However, I’ll be the judge as I do like a murder mystery and it’s worth a go I guess!
