At this time of year, with the beginning of the shorter, greyer and colder days, it’s easy for anyone to feel low.
The days where you don’t feel like you are your best self can become more and more frequent as we delve deeper into autumn and winter.
The days where you feel productive and can climb into bed knowing you did the best and most you can become fewer.
But bear with me here. It’s not all doom and gloom! In fact, it’s quite the opposite. At this time of year, there are a lot of simple things that bring me joy throughout the day (and hopefully you, too!).
The Morning Routine
Picture this. You climb out of bed in the morning and instead of just wanting a nice cup of tea or coffee – you need one. Instead of it being just “part of the routine”, a nice cuppa warms you up from inside out. Drink in that feeling, because that is so, so good when you need it.
The house is a little cold because you’d rather snuggle up under the duvet at night than be battling against the odds of getting the central heating temperature just right. You turn it up this morning so it clicks on. You hear that slight rumble from the boiler as it starts to do its job. Why wait to feel warm? Throw on your cosiest jumper, dressing gown or blanket until the warmth kicks in.
Once the central heating’s done its job, you now feel confident to shower. After all, when you step out from the jets of hot water, you don’t want to be hit with that cold snap shock.
Your Cosy Wardrobe
This time of year is my favourite for fashion. In fact, the rest of the year I couldn’t give a shit about clothes…but A/W, gimme all the jumpers! Chenille is my obsession this year, fyi.
Pro tip for an enhanced experience of jumper-putting-on joy: put it on the radiator while you shower. It’s like a warm and cosy hygge-ful hug. Bliss.
Pull on your favourite pair of jeans and boots with fluffy socks to complete the ultimate cosy wardrobe. Oh, and don’t forget the scarf that doubles as a blanket and the coat that keeps you snug.
The Autumnal Stroll
Let’s say it’s a Saturday, you’re all wrapped up in your abso fave autumn clothes. It’s sunny outside, but there’s that November chill in the air and the ground is a mosaic of rusty leaves. What better time to go for a stroll to a cafe and fill up on your second hot drink of the day?
For me, strolling in autumnal weather really blows away the cobwebs. Maybe it’s the crispness of the air, but it definitely helps to clear my head. Plus, I cannot get enough of taking shoe-fies stood amongst the leaves #basicbitch.
My nearest coffee shop is a good 20 or so minutes walk away which seems like AGES away – but it’s also in town so any excuse to also do some window shopping afterwards.
Once you get to the coffee shop, you decide to get your drink to takeaway. After all, it can keep you warmed up as you take a look around the shops and make a mental note of things to add to your Christmas wishlist. Or y’know, you could treat yoself to an early Christmas gift here and there. No one’s judging. We all do it.
You’re fairly certain at this point that you’ve burned off the calories from your hot drink (and if not, so what?), so you decide to head home. It feels like a longer slog than the walk in, but you know how great it’s going to feel to take your shoes off the minute you get through the door.
But not just the shoes come off. Oh no. It’s time to change from jeans to trackies and put on even bigger, fluffier socks. Then it’s time to scrape your hair back for the best Croydon facelift you can muster (look it up…), slather on a face mask and get reacquainted with Netflix. Stranger Things 2 isn’t going to binge-watch itself, is it?
As one episode becomes 2, becomes 3, becomes 4 (hopefully you remembered to take off the face mask), you decide to make your FAVOURITE dinner, or order from your FAVOURITE takeaway establishment. I’d probably make myself a big ol’ bowl of mac n cheese or order a Dominos tbh.
Before you know it, it’s time for an early night because let’s face it, that duvet has been calling for you since it started to get dark outside. Night night!
