…And we’re back again for another edition of WIBW!
I knew nothing about this movie before seeing it except who was in it – I hadn’t even seen a trailer. Even if I had, I don’t think I would have been any less confused by the time the end credits had rolled.
This film is strange, confusing and towards the end it gets very dark. It’s not an easy watch by any stretch but the performance from Jennifer Lawrence is absolutely incredible. Liam and I spent a good hour trying to dissect our thoughts on mother! after we saw it and although the film won’t be for everyone, I am glad I saw it.
Reality: 3 (I think…it feels like one of those films that if I see it again this rating *could* go up)
I had seen the trailer for Wind River before the film as Liam was keen for my thoughts on it and whether I’d want to see it with him.
I was pretty intrigued by the “mystery” element of it, as it’s essentially about Jeremy Renner’s character finding the body of a young girl who has been running away from something through the snow and the journey of him, an FBI agent (played by Elizabeth Olsen) and the local authorities trying to find out what happened.
The story is really well constructed and it was good to see Jeremy Renner play a more “meaty” role than Hawkeye in the Avengers movies!
Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Hands up who was pleasantly surprised by the first Kingsman film? I LOVED it. I thought it was brilliant and OMG THAT SCENE IN THE CHURCH. Amazing. So obviously I was pretty darn excited about seeing the sequel.
Annoyingly, the film had already started when we turned up because we got stuck in traffic (Liam later went to see the beginning to check out what we missed…about 30 seconds of it!). It throws you straight into it with an intense action scene that you’ll recognise from the trailer. It’s a really great scene in how it’s put together, but it does feel a little bit like it’s trying to replicate and amp up what we saw in the first film.
Which really sums up this sequel actually – it turns things up to 11 but in a way that to me felt like it had lost it’s way. They essentially Americanise it and make it just a little bit too “big” and too silly for me. Saying that, it’s still a decent film with some cool moments of action and I’d still recommend it!
Expectation: 4 (maybe I was ambitious, or just excited to be back in that “world”?)
What am I hoping to see next?
I love a good crime thriller tbh, and although I haven’t read the book this film is based on I am relatively optimistic based on the trailer. It might be utter tripe, but it’s got Michael Fassbender and J.K. Simmons in it so I’m there with bells on tbh.
I am SO hyped for this film. How good is the trailer and the music in it?! I’m choosing to forget how disappointing The Dark World was and having faith that Ragnarok will at least be in a closer league to the first Thor movie. I loved the Thor and Hulk moments in the first Avengers especially, so I can’t wait to see more.
