What I’ve Been Watching #11

Welcome back to WIBW where I write mini spoiler-free reviews of the movies I’ve seen recently!

Patti Cake$

Our most recent Unlimited screening was Patti Cake$, a film I’d been pretty interested in seeing as it looked like it was going to be the female version of 8 Mile which is actually a pretty accurate assessment of it!

The music is really good, the performances are great (especially from the woman who plays the titular character) and my only criticism would be that some of the plot lines didn’t get quite as much coverage as others but I still definitely recommend it!

Expectation: 4
Reality: A high 3.5

Logan Lucky

I’m not sure I can fairly review Logan Lucky, because it’s essentially a heist film and I fell asleep during the heist. Yup. I fell asleep, at the cinema.

In all fairness, I was exhausted but also the film was just…meh. All the funniest bits were in the trailer so you were left with little else other than a slight “twist” end in an attempt to make it less predictable. That ending relied on you having seen the heist as well as I was just left confused! So, my rating is based on what I *did* see.

Expectation: 3
Reality: 2.5

IT

I *hate* clowns and it took a long time just to watch the mini series of IT which turned out to not be scary at all (still great though, and Tim Currie is awesome). So, when I found out they were remaking it into a movie, and the first images of Pennywise came out, I wasn’t exactly excited to see it!

However, as the release date got closer and trailers came out, my feelings of fear were joined by feelings of anticipation and curiosity.

The good news, for me at least, is that the film isn’t as scary as I thought it would be. Partially because Pennywise isn’t particular ominous in the film (i.e. you know he’s coming because he appears so regularly), but also because the film takes a lighter tone with the dialogue and aims to also be comedic. The only truly scary part for me was Pennywise’s first appearance and poor Georgie…

One thing I did like about the movie was that they do take Pennywise’s shapeshifting abilities very seriously in this reboot, and it makes for some creep (not scary) scenes!

Expectation: 3.5
Reality: 3.5

So, what’s coming up next?

Wind River

I recently watched the trailer for this at Liam’s recommendation, and although I’m not begging to see it, it does look interesting. Plus, I’m a big fan of Elizabeth Olsen so fingers crossed it will be decent!

Expectation: 3

Blade Runner 2049

So I definitely need to rewatch Blade Runner before seeing this as I barely remember it, but Ryan Gosling is in it so y’know, it’ll hopefully be a good sequel!

Expectation: 3

I’ve heard It is fabulous. I’m a huuuge horror fan but I promised myself that I’d read the book first. That big, big ol’ book. Sigh.

Oh god the book is HUGE. I have an old edition of it at home that my uncle passed down to me that I really should read but it’s just SO long!
