Hi gang! WIBW is back, with some more spoiler-free mini reviews of films out at the cinema. Enjoy!
I went in to this movie knowing nothing more than the fact it stars Chris Evans and is directed by the guy who did 500 Days of Summer. That’s not usually enough to make me excited about a film exactly, but I was keen to see whether the film was going to be any good.
Tbh, I really enjoyed it. It made me laugh, I shed a few tears and I just found it to be utterly endearing. It was a decent drama with brilliant performances (particularly by Chris Evans and the young girl actor McKenna Grace), and I’d definitely recommend it as a Sunday afternoon wrapped up in a blanket with a cup of tea kind of film.
I am a big fan of Edgar Wright (although World’s End totally sucked), so I was really looking forward to Baby Driver! It’s a very cool movie, with an ace soundtrack and great performances, but it doesn’t really match up with the likes of Scott Pilgrim…but will anything, really?
Go see this if you like an action story with some twists and turns, and a love story that doesn’t dominate. It’s both fun and funny, and I would definitely recommend!
Spiderman : Homecoming
I went into this movie with a bit of Marvel fatigue. I don’t hate the movies by any stretch, but I get a bit bored of the formula, y’know? I know I’m not alone in this. BUT YOU GUYS. It was really great. I wasn’t expecting it at all, but this is a great Marvel movie. Not as good as the first Avengers, but a close second.
It was funny (actual laugh out loud funny) on multiple occasions, the villain was actually interesting, and you had just the right amount of Iron Man in there to not make it feel like he was shoehorned in to get bums on seats.
You might be thinking “ugh, do I really need to see another Spiderman reboot?” – but the answer is YES! You have got to see this movie because you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
The one downside is that there are a couple of action scenes that are a bit messy and you’re not entirely sure what’s going on…a classic CGI fest…but this is heavily outweighed by great characters, brilliant dialogue and some great MCU cameos.
Reality: 4 (almost a 4.5…I might need to watch Avengers again for comparison)
So what’s next?
It Comes At Night
I don’t really know anything about this film other than the fact that it’s some sort of thriller/horror movie, and I’m going to try and keep it that way as most of the time it’s better to go into a movie with as little knowledge as you can. I haven’t even seen the trailer so my expectation rating is a real stab in the dark!
The Big Sick
The trailer for this movie looks great! It’s all about the cultural differences between this Pakistani man and American woman as they develop a relationship. It looks like it’s going to be a really good comedy drama, and it’s based on the real story of star Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily Gordon (played by Zoe Kazan in the film).
