Oh hey gang – welcome to my second What I’ve Been Watching post where I share snappy mini reviews of the films I’ve seen at the cinema lately with my blessed Unlimited card. If you’re a movie fan, snatch one up ASAP. Yes, they are expensive but you basically only need to see like 3 films a month or something to make up the monthly cost.
ANYWAY, here’s the films I’ve seen lately and the ones I’m looking forward to next.
Office Christmas Party
So in my last WIBW post, I gave Office Christmas Party an ‘expected’ rating of 4/5, knowing full well I was being ambitious af as we all knew this was going to be a pretty average run-of-the-mill comedy. Yup, we were all right and my expectations were definitely too high.
To its credit, this movie does have a few genuine LOL moments which is always great – Jason Bateman, TJ Miller and Kate McKinnon were all pretty darn humorous. Jennifer Anniston also plays a good ‘villain’ of sorts, too. Go see this for a chuckle, but go in knowing that nothing is going to be particularly surprising about this film.
Expectation: 4/5 (lol what was I thinking?)
Reality: 3/5 (some funny moments)
Fantastic Beasts & Where To Find Them
Oh man, I really wanted to enjoy FB&WTFT but I just found it really average. Like painfully so. Don’t get me wrong, I was excited at the beginning when I heard the Harry Potter theme and I was ready for a fun nostalgia fest but what I got was a movie that felt like it was pandering to the US audience. It lacked the soul of the Harry Potter films in my opinion, which was a real pity.
I didn’t hate the film, but I wouldn’t rush to watch it again. Shame 🙁
Fun story though – Liam booked us tickets with our Unlimited cards to see this but he didn’t realise he’d booked an AD/S screening (audio description subtitles). We had to leave because they would’ve been too distracting, so had to book again for later in the day.
Reality: 2.5/5 (It would edge towards a 3 but it was kind of forgettable…)
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
I’ll start this little mini review by saying I’m not really a Star Wars fan. I didn’t hate the films, and The Force Awakens was actually pretty good, but generally I am pretty ambivalent to the SW universe. I went in to Rogue One hoping for it to be as good as TFA but unfortunately was pretty let down. The first 30 or so minutes of the film were really messy, and the last 30 minutes for me were the only properly entertaining part.
There weren’t, for me, any stand out moments in the film and I actually thought I was going to fall asleep a couple of times too! It needed more Darth Vadar, tbh.
I must sound like a proper Moaning Myrtle in these reviews, but I’m genuinely just disappointed that this (and FB&WTFT) weren’t better.
OH! I forgot to mention that when we saw this film we got Box tickets (they were dead cheap with our Unlimited cards). The Box is a separate room at the back, above the screen room where there’s a max of 20 seats and you can control the volume as it has a separate sound system. It was a slightly…odd experience that I would only really recommend if you go with enough friends to fill the box.
What’s up next?
Here’s the movies we have booked already and are looking forward to seeing in the New Year!
La La Land
I love Ryan Gosling, and I love Emma Stone. I also loved the film Whiplash, and the same director is behind La La Land so I’m hoping to really enjoy this movie. Although I’m not quite as fanatical about musicals as Liam is (Grease is in his top 3 movies of all time…), I do think this is going to be a lot of fun.
Live By Night
I’ll admit to not knowing a lot about this movie other than the fact it’s written, directed and co-produced by Ben Affleck and Ben Affleck is the bomb. He’s also in it, because I think he loves casting himself in his films and that’s fine with me.
It’s also a crime movie and I do like a good crime story.
