OK guys, full disclaimer before I get started.
This is my own personal opinion on what makes a good blog. Everyone will have different views on what makes a good blog, and I wrote this post, and created the video down at the bottom of this post to share my perspective. Plus, y’all clearly wanted to hear my thoughts on this as the topic was the most popular in the Twitter poll I ran.
So now that’s out of the way…let’s crack on shall we?
My latest Blog Talk video shared five things that I think makes a good blog. Here are those things in a bit more detail, plus the video if you’d prefer to hear me ramble a bit instead.
Thing #1 – A nice clean layout
Cor blimey, I love a good looking blog, don’t you? Some people couldn’t give a scooby if a blog looks good but I do like a nice aesthetic (if you want to hear me struggle to say ‘aesthetic’, then do watch the video!).
For me, it’s all about that clean look which allows the photography to really stand out, and for the words to be spaced out nicely. I mention in the video about a blog looking well branded, and what I mean by this is that it ties together nicely and consistently. You may not consciously be aware that you are design-inclined, but a nice design does tend to keep a visitor around longer.
Not sure how to create a nice looking blog? There are LOADS of templates out there to purchase at reasonable prices, or if you’re a lucky sod who can design and code, then you can create something completely unique to you. If, like me, the idea of coding makes you scared and confused, you can always customise a paid-for template to make it your own. Think nice colours, extra widgets and whatnot if you’re on WordPress.
Thing #2 – Make it easy to find social links
A bit of an odd tip maybe, but I personally feel it needs to be easy to find a blogger’s social links on their blog. Your social networks should be an extension of your blog, and so I want to be able to follow the blogger in as many ways as possible without getting arrested.
Pop your social links in your top nav if you can, or in the sidebar. OR BOTH! I have my core ones on the top, then the rest sit in the sidebar.
Thing #3 – Have a good variety of content
Although your blog might have a niche e.g. beauty, including some variety adds more dimensions to your content as well as creating a wider appeal. In my opinion, variety truly makes a good blog.
Create colour in your content by sharing your personality and letting it shine through. Lifestyle blogs have risen in popularity in the past few years, and I think this variety and character is the reason why.
Thing #4 – Have clear photography on your blog
Once upon a time, I used to think that photos weren’t all that important, and it was all about the words. But in all honestly, crappy photos can put me off.
You don’t need a DSLR to take a decent photo – I use a compact (Canon G7X) for mine, but smartphones are getting better at better at producing high quality images…so get snapping! Your photos don’t need to be professional at all, but adding minor edits can turn bland looking shots into pretty ones. Photoshop is great, but equally tools such as Lightroom and Canva are also perfectly suitable.
Thing #5 – Put your own spin on your content
As I’ve already said, putting your personality into your content is a surefire way of creating a good blog. Everyone is nosy and wants to get to know you, so be sure that it *is* you that you’re putting across. As much of you as you feel comfortable with, anyway.
My all time fave blogs are aces at putting across the blogger behind it, using particular vocabulary that I can imagine them actually saying (for all I know it’s an act, but it comes across as convincing!). That’s the key. Be you. Or at least be the version of you that you want to be.
If you don’t inject that winning personality, your copy can become so so bland.
So there’s five things that I think make a good blog! If you fancy watching the Blog Talk video, you can view it below.
It would be amazing if you could also pop on over to Youtube and subscribe to my channel – this way you’ll be updated when new Blog Talk videos or vlogs get uploaded. It’ll also make my day. So there’s that.
